BIMCO is adapting the SHIPMAN 2009 agreement currently used for the use of autonomous vessels, but the actual absence of autonomous vessels currently in service will involve ongoing adaptations, while the industry will advance its pioneering projects. The first version is expected to be published in 2021. All of BIMCO`s most popular charter parties, bill of lading and other standard agreements are available in an electronic format with BIMCos` online pay-as you-go-party party processing system. BIMCO specifies that transactions between shipowners and charterers must be carried out in a standardized, efficient and fair manner. Both parties know, basically, what they can expect from a BIMCO charter party. When a biMCO charter party is set up, non-legal marine professionals can often settle disputes by referring to the «four corners of the contract» without a lawyer. This can reduce stress and transaction costs, pass smooth negotiations and make it easier to generate more business and more profits. Although the «knock-for-knock/bury your own dead» clause was reaffirmed and reinforced by BIMCO, charterers often express Lord Acton`s observation that «absolute power is absolutely corrupt.» Because they have the power to negotiate, the clause is often removed by charterers. Finally, shipowners must «eat or die,» as they say in Germany. In the end, shipowners pray that the work will pass smoothly.
BIMCO has issued an authenticity clause of the contract to encourage parties who issue contracts on the basis of a BIMCO form to accept a clause received by an authorized source such as SmartCon. Since June 2017, Anastasios Papagiannopoulos, CEO of the Greek shipping company Common Progress, has been elected president of BIMCO. BIMCO is the largest international shipping organization representing shipowners; its membership controls about 65 per cent of the world`s tonnage and has members in more than 120 countries, including managers, brokers and agents. The association`s main objective is to protect its global membership by providing information and advice, while promoting fair business practices and facilitating the harmonization and standardization of commercial shipping practices and contracts.  We are helping members review new trading partners and recover millions of dollars a year, bIMCO`s Documentary Committee welcomed a new standard Memorandum of Understanding (MOA) for the sale and purchase of vessels, opening the door to extensive sectoral consultations before completing and publishing the new standard next year.
